Alley renamed in honor

WARREN — City council has renamed a downtown alley for a Warren-born musician who became famous for playing drums for the Seattle grunge band Nirvana.

David Grohl, born Jan. 14, 1969, moved from Warren to Springfield, Va., as a young boy. He was part of Nirvana from 1990 until the death of lead singer Kurt Cobain in 1994, and then founded the band Foo Fighters in 1995 and remains with the band today as lead singer and guitarist. The alley is just south of Market Street between Main and Park avenues.

NHS students do service

YOUNGSTOWN — Members of the National Honor Society at Boardman High School plan to finish a landscaping project at Beatitude House, a transitional housing facility on Fifth and Lora avenues.

The NHS members cleaned the facility’s patio and secured a donated picnic table and grill as a community service project. The landscaping, expected to wrap up today, concludes the project.

Woman reports threat

WARREN — A woman taking her daughter’s boyfriend home from work at 2:21 a.m. Thursday reported being threatened by two men wearing bandit-style rags over their faces, one of whom shot four times at them as they drove away.

A Warren police report says the two were traveling north on Tod Avenue at Fifth Street Southwest and had stopped at the light, when a man tapped on the driver’s-side window, pointed a handgun at the woman driver and ordered her to give him money.

As the woman drove away, one of the men fired four shots at the car, one of them hitting the car but not entering the passenger compartment. The men were both wearing cloth over their faces with holes cut out for their eyes. Police recovered four shell casings at the scene.
