Defending champs Youngstown shut out by Mount Vernon, 6-0

Mount Vernon recorded no errors in the Babe Ruth tourney, but Youngstown was haunted by four.

ZANESVILLE — Mount Vernon’s pitching and defense were too much for Youngstown in Tuesday’s Babe Ruth 15-year-old tournament final at Gant Municipal Stadium.

Corey Carpenter fired a three-hitter and his defense didn’t make an error behind him in a 6-0 win over defending champion Youngstown.

Mount Vernon advanced to the Ohio Valley Regional in Somerset, Ky., where it will open against Wisconsin.

The winners scored a run each in the third and fourth innings, but they put the game away after scoring four times to build a 6-0 lead.

Dakota Anderson laced a two-run single in the fourth and Alec Curry followed with an RBI single. Anderson then scored on an error to make it 6-0.

Ethan Abell added an RBI triple.

Youngstown was haunted by four errors.

Youngstown 6, Jefferson County 4

In the losers bracket finals Monday, Youngstown built a five-run lead but had to hold off a late rally to reach the championship game.

Youngstown took a 1-0 lead after one inning when Jonathan Zvara walked and scored on an error by the shortstop. It added three more in the second, as Patrick Rhodes had an RBI groundout and Zvara an RBI single, and Nathan Fader’s RBI groundout in the third made it 5-0.

But Jefferson stormed back. It scored three times in the fourth after loading the bases with no outs as Jeff Garey had a one-out groundout and Josh Mamula a two-run double.

Youngstown made it 6-3 in the fourth when Matt Lubonovic walked, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on Zvara’s single to right field.

Jefferson had two runners on in the sixth but managed only a run on Caleb Westlake’s run-scoring single. Runners were stranded on second and third after Adam Young popped out to end the inning.

Winning pitcher Josh Saverko struck out five and allowed only one earned run in a complete game. He allowed eight hits and walked two, but was hurt by three errors committed by the Youngstown defense.
