Palmer in trouble

COLUMBUS — Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer is trying to explain remarks that have gotten him in big trouble with Buckeyes fans.

USC’s 2002 Heisman Trophy winner told a Los Angeles radio station last week that it drives him crazy to hear all the talk about Ohio State when he’s in Cincinnati.

He said he can’t wait until Sept. 13 when Ohio State plays Southern Cal, and he hopes the Buckeyes “get an old fashioned Pac-10 butt-whipping.”

He also said he respects the Buckeyes and knows their fans are passionate. He said he’s just looking forward to a big game and his comments were all in the good fun of a college rivalry.

Injured Calzaghe calls off Jones fight

LONDON — Joe Calzaghe postponed his proposed September fight against Roy Jones Jr. because of a sprained right wrist.

Jones accepted the delay, telling The Associated Press on Tuesday that he wants the Welshman to be at his best when they finally fight.

The 36-year-old Calzaghe, who is unbeaten in 45 professional fights during a 15-year career, injured his hand Sunday in training for the Sept. 20 bout while punching pads.

Calzaghe, who relinquished his WBC super-middleweight title to fight Jones, is “absolutely distraught,” according to his father and trainer Enzo.

“He sprained his wrists on the pads,” Enzo Calzaghe told Setanta Sports News. Enzo said his son needs two or three weeks off before he starts punching again.

Calzaghe planned to see a hand specialist.
