LOWELLVILLE – Area golfers will participate in the sixth annual Michael T. Hartzell Memorial Golf Outing on Sunday at Knoll Run Golf Course, 1421 Struthers Coitsville Road, to raise money for a scholarship in memory of Patrolman Michael Hartzell.

Hartzell was a Youngstown police officer who was shot and killed April 19, 2003, while on duty. He was 26.

The original noon tee time is filled, but openings are available for an additional tee time at 7 a.m. The cost is $75 per player. Golfers will be placed on a four-person team for the event. Outback Steakhouse will supply lunch and dinner for the event.

Howie Hartzell, Michael’s father and chairman of the committee, said the outing has raised about $175,000 for scholarships since 2003. He attributes the event’s success to people’s generosity. “By the end of the day on Sunday, we’ll be 90 percent full for next year,” he said.

Serving with him on the committee are Laura Brown, William Leskovec, Al Massullo, Dan Rivers, Chris Scenna and Don Sherwood.

Who is eligible

The scholarship is divided between one student at Austintown Fitch High School and several from Youngstown State University. The Fitch student must be going into the field of criminal justice or a law enforcement-related field. The YSU students must have a parent or sibling who is involved in law enforcement. Hartzell said seven students will be named as finalists for the scholarships this fall.

“To have something in Mike’s name to help these kids get a career in law enforcement is just great,” said Mary Kay Hartzell, Michael’s mother.
