Robbery suspects escape

YOUNGSTOWN — An employee of the Schenley Carry-out on Mahoning Avenue told police that a bank deposit bag was snatched from his hand as he left the store Monday afternoon and the male suspect ran to a waiting car.

Officers on their way to a call on North Schenley Avenue saw the employee chase the suspect across Mahoning and saw the suspect get into a tan Chevrolet Cavalier. The male driver and the robbery suspect got out of the car and ran, with Patrolman Frank Bigowsky chasing the driver toward North Schenley and Patrolwoman Kelly Lamb chasing the passenger toward North Hazelwood Avenue. Neither was caught.

During her run, Lamb came across a third suspect in a yard on North Hazelwood who had a “large lump” on his hip and dropped a bundle of cash before running south toward Mahoning. He, too, was not caught. The bundle contained $550, reports show.

Spray ends fight

YOUNGSTOWN — Pepper spray had to be used to disperse a crowd of 20-plus girls, some of whom were fighting, Monday evening on the South Side.

Patrolman Shakir Perkins saw three girls walking toward Parkcliffe Avenue at 8 p.m., taking off their jewelry and saying they were going to fight as they approached about 20 girls standing on the corner. The officer said he warned the three girls more than once to turn around and walk away but they ignored him and began to fight with the others. The officer then warned he would use pepper spray but that didn’t stop the fight, either. The girls scattered when he did use the spray. Reports didn’t list the ages of the girls except to say they were juveniles.

4 charged in shooting

SHARON, Pa. — Three men and a juvenile are charged over a shooting in the city. According to documents on file at the office of District Justice James McMahon, the group got into a confrontation around 9:05 p.m. Sunday with four boys who were playing basketball in the 500 block of Baldwin Avenue.

Jacquaze Jones, 19, of Middletown, Ohio, is charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault and criminal conspiracy. He shot at a juvenile three times, police said.

Samuel D. Phillips Jr., 19, of Warren, is charged with aggravated assault and criminal conspiracy. Tony Bonner, 19, of Baldwin Avenue, is also charged with aggravated assault and criminal conspiracy. Jones and Phillips were arrested at a home on Baldwin Avenue. They failed to post $25,000 bonds at arraignments Monday. Bonner has not been arrested.

McDonald man arrested

BOARDMAN — A McDonald man accused of trying to steal meat from a South Avenue grocery store faces several charges.

William Cupan, 26, of Illinois Avenue, is charged with robbery, resisting arrest and obstructing official business. Police were called about noon Monday to Sparkle Market, South Avenue.

Store employees had chased Cupan into a nearby field after seeing him leave the store without paying for the meat, the report said. One of the employees tackled Cupan, and the two men fought with Cupan, a police report said.

Cupan also struggled as police tried to handcuff him, according to the report.

Held on drug charges

YOUNGSTOWN — Police arrested Willie J. Hill, 69, of Flo-Lor Drive, after he spit a plastic bag of suspected crack cocaine onto the ground while being searched at a traffic stop on Evergeen Avenue. Police said they stopped his car at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday after he failed to signal a turn from Rosedale Avenue onto Evergreen. Hill consented to a search of his vehicle, and officers said they found some suspected crack in a cigarette pack inside the car.

As they searched Hill, he spit out a bag of suspected crack, police said.

He was arrested on a charge of possession of cocaine and lodged in Mahoning County Jail pending arraignment today.
