Jerusalem Lutheran Church’s support of soldiers doesn’t end at the wall of stars.
Military altar: The church maintains a military altar featuring photos of soldiers, shell casings, K-rations and a poem, “The Stars on Our Walls.” Some photos are of church members, and others are relatives, friends and neighbors of members, said the Rev. David Conrad, pastor. “God doesn’t check church IDs,” he said. “Our congregation is unique in that people of other denominations sometimes attend.” Glen and Joan Roth help maintain the altar.
U.S. flag: An American flag and certificate are displayed in the altar area of the church. The flag flew over the Marine base in Fallujah, Iraq, and was given to the church by Marine Cpl. Ben Corey of Columbiana, who served three tours of duty. The Rev. Mr. Conrad recalled that Ben attended the church preschool.
Wristbands: A wristband project started with seed money from Washingtonville Veterans of Foreign Wars post. The bands have names of soldiers on them. “They’re another reminder to pray,” said Mr. Conrad, who wears multiple bands.
Services: The church also conducts a special Memorial Day service. Mr. Conrad said the Columbiana American Legion’s color guard participates in various services. When soldiers are home on leave or conclude their tours, they are invited to speak at a church service.
Other efforts: The church sends care packages and phone cards to soldiers. For more information about any of the projects, call the church at (330) 482-2136. The church Web site is Jerluthcolumbiana.org.
