Poland girls win state junior softball crown


Poland beat Ashtabula, 6-5, to advance to the Akron regional Aug. 2-5.

ASHTABULA — Three players had multiple-hit games as the Poland girls held off Ashtabula, 6-5, to win the Junior League (13-14) state softball championship Monday.

Poland will now play in the Akron regional August 2-6.

Emily Chandler collected a double and a single to drive in two runs and Maura Bobby had three hits and two RBIs.

Also for Poland, Kasie Serich had two hits and two RBIs.

Poland led 6-1 early and was still in front 6-4 entering the last inning.

Little League baseball

SOUTH POINT — Edmond Pilolli pitched a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts to lead Canfield past Avon 3-0 in the state tournament.

Alec Buchenic, Michael Piersante, Michael Kindins and Pilolli singled and Jim Leone doubled for the Cardinals, who will meet either Mt. Vernon or Dover tonight at 7.

NABF Seniors

STRUTHERS — The Brownlee Lookouts scored four times in the top of the first inning and moved into the championship round of the NABF Senior Regional with a 5-2 win over Rondinelli Tuxedo at Cene Park.

The Lookouts played R J Trucking Monday night for the championship.

Ronnie Stout, Matt Anderson and River McWilliams had two hits each for Brownlee with Matt Rosinski going 51‚Ñ3 on the mound for the win with six strikeouts.

Drew Fitzpartick, Jason Bagoly, Corey Hitt, and Kevin McCullough had two hits each for Rondinelli who had the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth with one out. McWilliams came on in relief and retired the next two and all three men he faced in the seventh for the save.

Todd Kibby suffered the loss for Rondinelli going the first three innings.

Babe Ruth 15s

The Youngstown Babe Ruth 15-year-olds won two games in the state tournament, defeating Cincinnati, 13-4, and Newark, 3-2.

Against Cincinnati, winning pitcher Josh Saverko got relief help from Matt Lubonovic and every player in the starting lineup had at least one hit.

Josh Davis lead the way with a single, double and triple and four RBIs. John Zvara added three hits and scored three times, while Tim Audia, Patrick Rhodes, John McCormick, Brad Ferraro, Saverko, and Lubonovic all had two hits.

Against Newark, Nate Fader pitched a complete game and also had two hits and scored a run. Brad Ferraro and John Zvara also had RBIs and Josh Davis had two hits.

Babe Ruth 13s

The Youngstown Babe Ruth 13-year-old team defeated Cambridge, 10-0, and Zanesville, 11-2, in the state tournament.

Against Cambridge, Christopher Maze, Robert Vargo, Dan Ferguson and Ryan O’Hara combined on a no-hitter.

Vargo, Brendon Cope and Jacob Froats all had two hits.

Against Zanesville, Maze and Ryan Brumbaugh combined on a three-hitter with nine strikeouts.

Ferguson had two hits and five RBIs, while Brumbaugh and Cope had two hits each.

Warren AA

WARREN — Jeremy Albani had a triple and double, and drove in three runs to lead Cleats Club Seat Grille over the Mahoning Valley Knights, 11-6, Sunday.

Anthony Maruca and Nick Zajaczkowski added two hits and two RBIs apiece for Cleats, while Mike Swoboda, Josh Miller, Nick Pompeo all singled twice.

Torrie Frangiamore hit a pair of doubles for the Knights, while Derek Stanton hit a triple and single. Mike Kelly singled twice and Rick DiMuzio had four RBIs.
