McDonald man accused in meat theft

BOARDMAN — A McDonald man faces several charges accused of trying to steal meat from a South Avenue grocery store.

William Cupan, 26, of Illinois Avenue, McDonald, was charged with robbery, resisting arrest and obstructing official business. There were also warrants issued through the Mahoning County Sheriff’s office accusing Cupan of failing to appear in court on a theft charge and a probation violation. Cupan was housed in the Mahoning County Jail and is scheduled to appear in Mahoning County Area Court July 29.

Police were called about noon Monday to Sparkle Market, South Avenue, on a robbery report.

Store employees had chased Cupan into a nearby field after seeing him leave the store without paying for them. One of the employees tackled Cupan and the two men fought with Cupan, a police report said.

Cupan also struggled as police tried to handcuff him, according to the report.
