Fires damage vacant store and houses


YOUNGSTOWN — A vacant store on Glenwood Avenue and vacant houses on Lakewood and East High avenues burned over the weekend.

Damage to the vacant store at 1103 Glenwood on the South Side was set at $47,000, a total loss. The cause is under investigation.

Firefighters on the scene at 12:30 a.m. Saturday found heavy flames coming from the middle of the roof and the building’s doors and windows locked. By the time firefighters got inside, the structure was too far gone and the roof was falling so crews were pulled out.

At 5:15 a.m. Saturday, a vacant house at 1116 East High Ave. on the East Side, flames were visible from a second story window. The fire started in the living room on the first floor. No major structural damage was noted and damage was listed at $3,000. The cause is under investigation.

An intentionally set fire destroyed the vacant house at 514 Lakewood Ave. on the South Side at 10:30 p.m. Sunday, reports show. Damage was set at $14,000, a total loss.

Heat from the fire caused exposure damage to houses at 513 and 524 Lakewood, the fire department said.
