Do’s and don’ts

Consider bringing an extra-large, resealable plastic bag to store your suitcase in during hotel stays. It must be airtight if it is to be bug-tight.

Bedbugs are said to smell like sweet, rotten raspberries or almonds. If you get a whiff of that, it means a heavy infestation.

Check to see if the suitcase stand is free of pests and then use it.

Carry a small flashlight to help you inspect a hotel room. Turn off the lights and lift the sheets to inspect the mattress for the telltale black fecal spots.

Don’t put your clothes or suitcases on the bed.

Use hard, smooth luggage, not cloth luggage.

Keep your suitcase closed when you’re not using it.

When you leave to go home, inspect every article you put into your suitcase carefully.

When you get home, do not unpack your suitcase on your bed. Vacuum suitcases inside and out after returning from vacation.
