Earned Eagle Award

David Makara, son of Ray and Trish Makara of Canfield, will be presented with the Eagle Scout Award at a court-of-honor ceremony at 7 p.m. July 30 in Canfield United Methodist Church, 27 S. Broad St.

David was a member of Cub Scout Pack 25 from 1998 to 2002 and attained the rank of Arrow of Light, Cub Scouting’s highest award. He joined Boy Scout Troop 25 in 2002. His scoutmaster is Kevin Prus Sr.

He has been the troop’s senior patrol leader, assistant patrol leader, patrol leader, chaplain’s aide and assistant senior patrol leader and has earned 30 badges. He received several special scout awards, including Fifth Year Pipestone and Pope Pius XII Religious Award. He was an ordeal member of Wapashuwi Lodge Order of the Arrow and attended Philmont Scout Ranch Back Pack Trip in 2005.

For his Eagle Scout service project, he planned, designed, coordinated and supervised the installation of a flagpole in the courtyard of Canfield United Methodist Church.

David is a senior at Canfield High School and is a member of its symphonic orchestra and National Honor Society. He is a member of St. Michael Church and its brass ensemble. He is also a member of Youngstown Symphony Youth Orchestra.

Received doctorate

Gladys N. Hayes-Whitfield, daughter of McCoy and Carol Hayes of Youngstown, has received her doctorate in Christian psychology and counseling from the Cornerstone Christian University in Orlando, Fla.

Hayes-Whitfield graduated second in her class summa cum laude. She is a graduate of the former North High School and received her bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1983, and master of science in community counseling in 1986, both from Youngstown State University.

She was a charter member of Chi Sigma Iota Honorary Counseling Society, a member of the Christian Association for Psychological Studies and a member of the National Board of Certified Counselors.

Hayes-Whitfield is a licensed professional clinical counselor/supervisor with Turning Point Counseling Services in Struthers. She is a distance instructor on the faculty of Cornerstone Christian University and supervises in private practice.

She conducts Women Working to Overcome and Win, a support group for women at Metro Assembly of God Church in Youngstown.

She is married to Reginald C. Whitfield, and is the mother of two children, James and Caylin.
