HOWLAND — Township trustees have contracted with Alexander Pest Control to reduce the area’s mosquito population. The company will spray neighborhoods between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Aug. 11-12 and Sept. 8-9. Residents are asked to close their windows, keep pets indoors and not to leave food outdoors during the spraying.

Tire pickup to begin

MINERAL RIDGE — Weathersfield Township has again received a grant from the Trumbull-Geauga Solid Waste District for $2,700 to pay for the township’s old automobile tire pickup program.

The pickup, for township residents only, will be the first and second weeks of August. There will be curbside pickup of the old tires, and the limit is eight per household.

The pickup will be Aug. 4 through 8 and Aug. 11 through 15. No truck tires or mounted tires are accepted.

Residents who have more than eight tires to dispose of can bring them to the township administration building, 1452 E. Prospect St., during regular business hours from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Beloit dispatching OK’d

SALEM — A special Salem council meeting has been set for 4:30 p.m. Monday to approve providing fire dispatching service to the village of Beloit.

Salem Mayor Jerry Wolford has agreed to enter into the agreement starting Aug. 1. He said that Beloit was one of seven volunteer fire departments that will need dispatching services after MedCorp ends its services on July 31.

Wolford said the city would provide dispatching services to other fire departments, if needed.

Artist returns to park

YOUNGSTOWN — In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Fellows Riverside Gardens, artist Gary Bukovnik will return to the city with new watercolor works called “Blooms of Summer.” The works will be on display in the Weller Gallery at Fellows Riverside Gardens from Friday through Sept. 14. The gardens are part of Mill Creek MetroParks.

Working in watercolor, monotype and lithograph, Bukovnik’s work fuses sensual vitality with fluid colorations, creating floral images of depth and intensity. Cleveland born and educated, Bukovnik’s work is represented in public and private collections around the world.

The gardens is a botanical display garden free of charge from dawn to dark.

Art, writing exhibit set

NILES — The Advocate of Not-For-Profit services for Older Ohioans is having its annual Mideast regional art and writing exhibition from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Shepherd of the Valley-Niles, 1500 McKinley Ave. More than 75 pieces of art and writing have been submitted for this year’s competition.

Work has been submitted from residents for four retirement communities: Shepherd of the Valley-Niles, Shepherd of the Valley-Boardman, Assumption Village and Copeland Oaks. The majority of the entries this year are in the fine arts category. Winners at the regional level will go to the state competition in Columbus in September.

Between July 28 and Aug. 4, art from local artists can be seen at Niles SCOPE. In addition to the show at SCOPE, arrangements are being made for selected pieces to be shown at the Eastwood Mall art gallery.
