NFL ROUNDUP \ News and notes

Redskins: Second-round draft pick Devin Thomas of Michigan State signed a $4.83 million, four-year contract, two days before training camp. The deal includes a signing bonus of about $2.7 million for the wide receiver, who was Washington’s top selection in April’s NFL draft. The 6-foot-2, 218-pound Thomas was taken 34th overall and was the second wideout drafted. The Redskins have nine of their 10 draft picks under contract with camp to begin Sunday. The only pick still unsigned is Southern California tight end Fred Davis, who was taken later in the second round. Also Friday, the Redskins released fullback Pete Schmitt. He was in training camp with Washington last year, was released before the start of the regular season, then was re-signed in March.

Chiefs: Safety DaJuan Morgan agreed to a three-year contract, giving the team deals with six of their 12 draft picks. Details of Morgan’s contract were not announced. The third-round draft pick played at North Carolina State. With a week left before training camp, the Chiefs have not yet signed their two first-round picks, LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey and Virginia tackle Branden Albert, or their second-round choice, cornerback Brandon Flowers. Running back Jamaal Charles of Texas, tight end Brad Cottam of Tennessee and tight end Michael Merritt of Central Florida also have not signed.

Jets: Tight end Dustin Keller, the 30th overall pick in the draft, was signed to a multi-year contract. The signing leaves defensive end-linebacker Vernon Gholston, taken sixth overall, as the Jets’ only unsigned draft pick. New York opens training camp next Thursday. The speedy Keller, known more for his receiving skills than his blocking, caught 142 passes for 1,882 yards and 16 touchdowns for Purdue and will give the Jets a much-needed vertical threat alongside starting wide receivers Laveranues Coles and Jerricho Cotchery. Keller, who originally went to Purdue as a wide receiver, had a terrific senior season, catching 68 passes for 881 yards and seven touchdowns while earning team MVP honors. He’ll add depth to the tight end spot for New York, which also has veterans Chris Baker and Bubba Franks, and A.J. Schable, Jason Pociask and James Dearth, primarily a long snapper, on the roster. Also Friday, the Jets waived rookie cornerback Jonathan Zenon, an undrafted free agent from LSU.

Saints: Kicker Taylor Mehlhaff and wide receiver Adrian Arrington agreed to terms, leaving only three draft picks unsigned as training camp approaches next week. Mehlhaff, who was picked in the sixth round, and Arrington, picked in the seventh, both agreed to three-year deals, Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said. Earlier, the Saints signed their fifth-round pick, defensive tackle DeMario Pressley. Negotiations continue with the Saints’ top pick, defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis; second-round choice, cornerback Tracy Porter; and offensive tackle Carl Nicks, the first of their two fifth-round picks.
