Late error spills Scrappers, 4-3

Isaias Velasquez went 2-for-3 and scored a run for Mahoning Valley.

LOWELL, Mass. — The Lowell Spinners scored an unearned run with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the Mahoning Valley Scrappers 4-3 in a New York-Penn League game on Friday.

Pinch-hitter Ronald Bermudez reached on a throwing error by Scrappers shortstop Walter Diaz, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Jonathan Hee followed with a single to left to score Bermudez.

Isaias Velasquez went 2-for-3 and scored a run for the Scrappers (14-16), while Ramon Hernandez hit his first double and scored a run in the loss.

Garrett Rieck (1-1) got the loss.

Carlos Arias pitched four innings of shutout relief for Mahoning Valley, striking out seven, walking two and giving up two hits.

Jonathan Hee and Mitch Dening each had two hits for Lowell (13-17).

Dening also scored two runs and Sumoza drove in two.

Mitchell Herold (1-0) pitched a scoreless ninth to get the victory.
