Falcons take 2 to stay on top


Rondinelli posted a victory while Livi Steel suffered a defeat.

STRUTHERS — The Astros Falcons defeated the Blue Devils 9-7 and Ohio Thunder 10-2 on Friday to keep the lead in Pool B in the NABF Junior Regional tournament at Cene Park.

Sutton Whiting hit three singles and drove in two runs against the Blue Devils. Brock McGivern hit a pair of singles. Ryan Gallager pitched four innings with four strikeouts to pick up the win.

Anthony Siciliano, Cal Thomay, Bill Guttermuth and Nick Martin each had two hits for the Blue Devils.

The Falcons pounded out 13 hits and got a complete game three-hitter from pitcher Kolin Stanely against Ohio Thunder.

John Beaty and Mike Natale had three hits apiece and Kyle Allen two hits and three RBIs for the Astros.

Bobby Butvin had two hits for the Thunder.

Rondinelli Tuxedo 5, Andy’s 9ers 2

STRUTHERS — Bo Slemons had two hits while Anthony Rachilla drove in two runs with his fifth double of the tournament and he pitched 11‚Ñ3 innings to pick up a save. Matt Jurevicius had a pair of hits for Andy’s 9ers.

Rondinelli’s and Northern Ohio Hurricanes share the lead in Pool A with 2-1 records.

Struthers — Andy’s 9ers scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Bryan Miller, Jurevicius and Erik Bokar had two hits each for Andy’s, while Eric Mathews tossed a complete game with four strikeouts for the win. Will Frazier and Mike Gatta had two hits each for Livi, with Gatta driving home three runs.

Ohio Hurricanes 5, Rondinelli Tuxedo 2

STRUTHERS — The Hurricanes bounced back from their opening-round loss to hand Rondinelli their first defeat. Matt Grauel went the distance, allowing only two runs on seven hits. Xavier Bonilla, Jake Thomas and Cory Napoli each had two hits. Rondinelli’s Anthony Raschilla had two hits, including his fourth double in two games.

Poland stopped

KENTON — The tournament trail came to an end for the Poland 12-year-old softball team as it lost to Tallmadge 5-4 in the Little League State Championship game Friday.

Jess Rutana pitched a compete game. She allowed seven hits with four strikeouts and she had a hit and scored once. Meredith Tesone had a hit and she scored twice. Phoebe Bush had a hit and drove in two runs and Anna Barnhart had a hit and scored once.

Tallmadge advances to the Central Regional tournament in Missouri.

Warren AA League P.I. I Express 2, Trumbull County Predators 1

WARREN — Express (7-15) won for the second straight day over the Predators (4-17). Dave Tofil worked six innings, with two strikeouts to pick up the win. Joe Hardy scattered four hits, with nine strikeouts in a losing cause. Dave Patrick and Frank Rosile each hit a single and scored for the Express in the two-run fifth inning.

Mahoning Valley Knights 5, Cleats Club Seat Grille 0

WARREN — The Knights (18-3) scored two runs in the third inning and three in the fifth to prevail. Billy Couchenour scattered five hits, with seven strikeouts to pick up the win. Torrie Frangiamore hit a two-run home run in the third inning. Nick Pompeo hit a double and single for Cleats Club (10-12).

Flex Strut 8, Champion Marlins 5

WARREN — Flex Strut (13-5), behind 5-3, scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sean Lucas and Jeff Claar each hit a double and two singles, while Jim Newbrough and Billy Eddy hit a pair of singles apiece. DJ Gross hit a double and single for the Marlins (12-10) and Jason Johnson hit three singles.

Struthers defeated South Range 3-2 in a Palomino fastpitch game.
