Bevilacqua signs with Illinois Tech

MINERAL RIDGE — TJ Bevilacqua will play basketball at Illinois Tech, a NAIA Div. I college, next winter.

Bevilacqua is a 6-foot-6 forward who collected 18 points and eight rebounds a game for Mineral Ridge High last season.

He was all-league and honorable mention all-state as a senior.

Race set Aug. 23

ALLIANCE — The Alliance Community Hospital twilight 5K run/walk and one-mile children’s fun run is scheduled for August 23.

Bruno shot a 4-over, 79.

KENT — Jacob Detec of Girard shot 36-40SEmD76 to tie for sixth place in the Boys 16-19 Division of the Northern Ohio PGA Junior Golf Tournament.

The tournament was contested at the Raccoon Hill Colf Club.

In the boys 13-15, Mitchell Weaver of Warren tied for 12th with a 40-41SEmD81.

Also, Taylor Salerno of Canfield carded a 48-51SEmD99 in the girls 13-15.

Modern Pentathlon

CAIRO, Egypt – Bethany College sophomore Suzanne Stettinius placed 33rd out of 60 competitors at the Modern Pentathlon Junior World Championships held in Cairo, Egypt.

The Modern Pentathlon competition consists of five events, including shooting, fencing, swimming, riding and running.

Stettinius qualified for the World Championships in June at the US Junior Nationals, which were held in Ligonier, Pa.

Stettinius, a member of Bethany’s cross country and swimming diving teams, compiled 4,876 total points during the one-day competition.

In addition to that total placing her 33rd among all competitors, it was also the second-highest total posted by a member of the four-person American team, which placed ninth overall.

Dafler elected chair

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Westminster College Director of Athletics Jim Dafler was elected to serve as the chairperson for the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Committee.

Dafler was voted to serve as the chair by his fellow committee members for the 2008-09 season, his final year of a four-year term on the committee.

CANFIELD — Brad Dofka drove in two runs for Boardman West in its Little League game against Canfield Tuesday night. In a story in Wednesday’s paper, Kyle Gallagher was incorrectly credited with the hit.

Wicky has surgery

CARSON, Calif. — Chivas USA midfielder Raphael Wicky had reconstructive surgery on his right ankle Wednesday and is expected to be sidelined for at least three months.

Wicky, a World Cup veteran with more than a decade of professional experience in Germany, Spain and Switzerland, had one assist in five games with Chivas USA this season.

Horcoff inks extension

EDMONTON, Alberta — Shawn Horcoff signed a six-year, $33 million contract extension with the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday.

Horcoff had 21 goals and 29 assists in 53 games last season before undergoing season-ending surgery on his left shoulder. The 29-year-old forward is set to make $3.6 million this coming season.

The deal allows the Oilers, who have had trouble luring free agents to Edmonton this off-season, to keep Horcoff.

Irish Actress Stakes

NEW YORK — Rewrite earned her fourth stakes win in the last five races, edging Latitude Forty on Wednesday to take the $77,500 Irish Actress Stakes for New York-bred fillies and mares at Belmont Park.

Rewrite prevailed by a nose, improving her overall record to 9-for-16. The 5-year-old ridden by Alan Garcia for trainer Christophe Clement ran the 1 1-16 miles in 1:40.60.

Indiana gets FieldTurf

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana is installing FieldTurf on its football field after flooding last month ruined the old playing surface at Memorial Stadium.

Workers began laying down portions of the turf Wednesday in the stadium’s north end zone. The school expects the field to be ready for the Hoosiers’ season opener Aug. 30 against Western Kentucky.
