2nd inning leaves Lowell spinning

The Scrappers scored all of their runs in the second inning of a 6-4 victory.

LOWELL, Mass. — The Mahoning Valley Scrappers scored all of their runs in the second inning and went on to defeat the Lowell Spinners, 6-4, in a New York-Penn League game Wednesday night.

Douglas Pickens had the big hit in the Scrappers’ rally, a run-scoring double, but Mahoning Valley (13-15) also took advantage of Lowell pitcher Bryan Price’s wildness. Juan Valdes scored on a wild pitch and Pickens crossed on a passed ball by Spinners catcher Tim Federowicz.

The Scrappers also scored on singles by Ryan Blair and Lonnie Chisenhall, and a bases-loaded walk issued to Juan Valdes.

Starting pitcher Kaimi Mead (3-3) picked up the win, allowing three earned runs in five innings. Brian Grening and Wilfredo Ramirez finished up, with Ramirez earning his second save with two shutout innings.

The Scrappers, who have won a season-high three games (scoring 31 runs over that stretch), will play Lowell again today at 7:05 p.m. in the second game of a three-game series.
