YMCA Triathlon set for Saturday
Registration deadline is Thursday.

YOUNGSTOWN — The 13th annual Youngstown Central YMCA Triathlon will be Saturday.
For those 11 and up, the first heat of the triathlon begins at 7 a.m., and for youth ages 3 to 16 the first heat begins at 10:15 a.m. at the Youngstown YMCA Central Branch on Champion Street.
All start times are approximate, and participants should arrive 45 minutes before the start of his or her heat, said Maureen Horvath, race director.
Adult contestants will swim 500 yards, which is 10 laps of the pool, bike 10 miles; and run three miles. Distances for youth contestants are broken down by age groups.
The bike portion of the triathlon will take participants on a double loop from Commerce Street up Fifth Avenue. They will turn around at Gypsy Lane and ride back down to the start.
The run will begin at Commerce Street and take participants to Fifth Avenue, around Wick Park and back out and down to the start.
Commerce Street will be closed between Fifth Avenue and Walnut Street. Cyclists will ride with traffic, and police will be on site to regulate traffic flow on Fifth Avenue.
Entry fees are $40 for adult YMCA members, $48 for adult nonmembers, $18 for youth members and $24 for nonmembers. Cost for each additional child per family is $12 for members and $17 for nonmembers.
All youth participants will receive a medal during the awards ceremony, and first-place and runner-up awards will be given to the top male and female in the adult division.
Horvath said the deadline to register has been extended to Thursday at 5 p.m. and checks should be made to Youngstown YMCA.
More than 200 people have signed up for the event, and more are expected before the registration deadline.
Participants must attend a pre-race meeting Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the facility’s youth lobby.
