Sugar eliminated; 9ers to face Troy in title game


The last local team was beaten by Heights Hawks, which then withdrew from the Connie Mack tournament.

STRUTHERS — The last local team, Dave Sugar Excavating of the Class B League, was eliminated Tuesday in the sixth round of the 46th Ohio State Connie Mack Baseball Tournament at Cene Park.

Sugar lost to the Heights Hawks, 11-6.

The Heights Hawks broke open a 6-6 tie when they scored three runs in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth to prevail.

Todd Kibby hit a pair of singles for Sugar. Losing pitcher Jake Kucek hit a triple.

Brian Lawless and Nick Snyder hit three singles apiece for the Hawks.

Tournament action continues today as Andy’s 9ers, the last undefeated team, takes on Troy American Legion Post 43 at Cene Park 1 at 3 p.m.

The Heights Hawks have withdrawn from the tournament. If the 9ers win, they are state champs. If Troy wins, the title game will be played at Cene 1 at 5:30 p.m.

Dave Sugar 12, Rondinelli 4

STRUTHERS — Sugar used two big innings to eliminate Rondinelli Tuxedo in the Connie Mack tournament.

Sugar scored five times in the second inning and put the game away with a seven-run outburst in the sixth.

Dustin Uhlman and Joey Borrelli each hit two singles, while Dan Banna belted a bases-loaded triple for Dave Sugar.

Scott Hanicak pitched 21‚Ñ3 innings of scoreless, hitless relief for the win. Cory Hill drove home two runs for Rondinelli with a double.

Warren AA League

Elite Shockers 8, Trumbull County Predators 0

WARREN — Jeremy Krol pitched a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts, giving him 97 for the season. He also hit a pair of singles for the Shockers (15-8), who lead the Dorchock Division.

John Wagner hit a single for the Predators (4-14) in the fifth inning.

Champion Marlins 4, Cleats Club Seat Grille 3

WARREN — Unbeaten pitcher Tom Popadak scattered five hits with 11 strikeouts to pick up the win for the Marlins (11-9). Jason Johnson hit a two-run double for Champion in the first inning.

Jake Gross also hit a double. Josh Miller hit a double for Cleats Club (9-11).
