Ex-fire chief recognized

NORTH LIMA — Beaver Township trustees have recognized former fire Chief Gary Borman for nearly 10 years of full-time service to the township.

Borman was named the township’s first fire chief after serving as a part-time firefighter for several years. The township presented Borman with a plaque at a meeting Monday and credited him for advancing the fire department. Township officials said Borman helped the township acquire most of the equipment now being used by safety personnel.

Borman, whose retirement was effective June 30, continues serving as a firefighter and an emergency medical service technician on a voluntary basis.

In related news, the trustees announced Russ Osborne, acting fire chief, will remain deputy fire chief pending the negotiation and finalization of his contract. Officials previously announced Osborne would take over for Borman once Borman’s retirement became official.

In other business, the trustees agreed to pay Scott Conway, township park administrator, $9.11 hourly to work as a part-time recycling coordinator. Officials said the extra help is needed because of increased demands at the township recycling center.

The trustees also hired Kristen Harroff as an assistant summer camp director, pending the receipt of her criminal background check. Her hourly wage was set at $7.

Conway said he expects her to work four hours a day for 10 days during the two weeks the day-camp program is conducted. He said more help is needed to run the program because of an increased number of children participating this year.

The program, which is in its second year, attracted some 20 participants last summer, but more than 60 area youth have registered this year.

Also, the trustees accepted the resignation of part-time police officer Glen E. Corey, effective June 27, for personal reasons. Reserve police officer David DiIanni was promoted to part-time status, effective next Sunday.

Officials announced state Rep. Mark Okey of Carrollton, D-61st, will host a town hall meeting at 7 p.m. Aug. 18 at the township administration office. They said Okey will be available to answer questions and discuss his responsibilities and government workings on the state level. Okey’s district takes in Carroll, Mahoning, Stark and Tuscarawas counties.
