Scrappers rebound for split
Jeremie Tice’s three hits powered Mahoning Valley past Hudson Valley.
VINDICATOR STAFF REPORT
NILES — Jeremie Tice had three hits, including his second home run of the season, and the Mahoning Valley Scrappers scored in every inning but one of their 13-2 rout of the Hudson Valley Renegades in a New York-Penn League game at Eastwood Field Sunday night.
The victory, which snapped a two-game losing streak for the Scrappers (10-15), was part of 14-inning day between the teams.
Saturday’s game was suspended by thunderstorms in the third inning, and was completed Sunday. Hudson Valley won that game, 3-0.
In the nightcap, Tice was joined in Mahoning Valley’s hit parade by Ryan Blair, who also had three hits, including a triple, and (like Tice) two RBIs.
Tice also had a double, as did Zach Booker. Ramon Hernandez and Booker also had two RBIs.
Hernandez had one of the more strange boxscore lines: 0-for-0, with three runs scored and the two RBIs. He walked once and was hit once with the bases loaded.
P.J. Zocchi (2-1) was the recipient of all that offense. He went five innings, allowing three hits and a pair of earned runs on Jacob Jefferies first home run of the season.
Mark Rodrigues finished up with two shutout innings.
That blast gave the Renegades a 2-1 lead in the second inning, but the Scrappers answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame on Booker’s run-scoring double and an error by Hudson Valley shortstop Robi Estrada.
Mahoning Valley then scored five runs in the third inning, the big hits coming on Tice’s two-run homer and Blair’s two-run triple.
The Scrappers added four more runs in the fourth inning — on one hit. RBIs went to Hernandez on a hit batsman and Donnie Webb and Booker on sacrifice flies. Another run scored on a passed ball.
First game
In the completion of Saturday night’s suspended game, Michael Ross hit a pair of singles for RBIs and the Renegades used four pitchers to shut out Mahoning Valley.
Hudson Valley scored a single run in the first inning on Jason Tweedy’s ground-rule double which chased home Robi Estrada, who had led off the game by drawing a walk.
In the second and seventh innings, Hudson Valley’s Jacob Jefferies hit one-out doubles and Ross drove him in both times.
Shane Dyer started for the Renegades Saturday night and was replaced by Tyree Hayes when played resumed Sunday.
Hayes (1-3) allowed one hit and four walks over 32‚Ñ3 hitless innings to pick up the victory. Joshua Satow and Matthew Gorgen finished up, with Gorgen pitching the ninth to earn his fifth save of the season.
Jefferies finished with three hits for the Renegades, while Tweedy and Ross had two each.
Donnie Webb’s double was one of only four hits by the Scrappers, who were 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
Russell Young (1-1), who pitched the first two innings of the game Saturday night, took the loss.
The teams finish up their series tonight at 7:05 at Eastwood Field.
