Mulligan propels Falcons’ victory


STRUTHERS — Pat Mulligan tossed a five-hit complete game as the Astro Falcons won their second straight contest, 8-1, over Thunder Select, in the second round of the AABC Connie Mack state tournament at Cene Park Sunday night.

Mulligan allowed only one earned run and struck out eight.

Ryan Rovnak, Trent Vallinger and Jared Turocy had two hits each with Rovnak and Turocy also driving home two runs apiece.

Jon Hartman had two hits for Thunder Select.

Eastside Thunder 5, Livi Steel 2

Livi Steel committed five errors that led to three unearned runs as they suffered their first loss of the tournament.

Bobby Herberger and Mike Livi had two hits each for Livi while Zach Cuffman went the distance, allowing only two earned runs.

Jarron Harris and Bryan McCrystal had two hits each for the Thunder which got a complete game from Evan Knoblach who had eight strikeouts.

Dave Sugar Excavating 9, Fielder’s Choice 1

Dave Sugar bounced back from an opening round loss to defeat Fielder’s Choice in six innings.

Pat O’Brien went the first four innings allowing only three hits with four strikeouts for the win. He also had a pair of hits and two RBIs.

Justin Shaffer and Sam Porter also had two hits for Dave Sugar.

Stark County Terriers 10, R J Trucking 5

R J Trucking became the first Youngstown team knocked out of the tournament.

Alex Caghan and Joe Corfman had a pair of hits for the Terriers.

Joe Wielbruda had three hits for and John Madeline drove home a pair of runs for R J Trucking.

Rondinelli 9, Fielder’s Choice 4

Cory Nesbitt hit a grand slam in the first inning while Drew Fitzpatrick had four hits Saturday night.

Fitzpatrick had a triple and a pair of doubles, along with a single while Kevin McCollugh tossed a four-hitter allowing only one earned run with five strikeouts.

Chase Westphal had two hits for Fielder’s Choice.

Hawks 4, R J Trucking 3

R J Trucking managed only four hits as they lost their opener Saturday night.

Mike Popio had two of the hits and Evan Campbell hit a triple.

Luke Farrell, who went 31‚Ñ3 innings of scoreless relief, got the final out for the win for the Hawks. Tim Wetzel had two hits for the winners.
