Salvation Army seeking funds to send at-risk youths to camp
YOUNGSTOWN – The Newton Falls branch of the Salvation Army is looking for “Angels” to help sponsor children for a summer camp. The weeklong camp gives 25 at-risk children the opportunity to participate in sports, swim, explore the outdoors and make crafts.
“It’s an experience not to be missed,” said Tom Chmura, field representative for the Salvation Army. “Time spent at camp can be a life-changing experience for kids. It can instill feelings of self-worth, open up the world and offer hope for the future.”
There are still openings for children who wish to take part in the camps, and more sponsors are needed.
Chmura said the cost of transportation and the five-day camp is around $225 per child. He added that there is no limit or minimum to what an individual can donate.
“There are lots of spots and not enough money to fill them,” said camp coordinator Doug Herlinger. “I hope the community will come through for these deserving kids. For many of them, it’s the highlight of the whole year.”
According to a Salvation Army press release, thousands of underprivileged children attended nearly 50 Salvation Army residential camps in 2007.
The release added that the camp prevents kids from “wandering the mean streets” and “hanging out with other idle kids — many of them bad influences ... a recipe for trouble.”
