Local reservists to Iraq

VIENNA — Thirteen local Air Force reservists were deployed to Iraq on Saturday for a six-month tour of duty. The specialists are part of the 910th Security Forces Squadron and will serve at Kirkuk Air Base. The squadron is based at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station.

It recently has been involved in training opportunities to prepare for the high-threat environment, including two weeks at Camp Gruber in Oklahoma. The ground combat skills exercise included classroom work, practical applications and training for urban environments.

Kirk bridge to close

AUSTINTOWN — The Kirk Road bridge over state Route 11 will be closed for 90 days beginning Monday. The closure is part of an Ohio Department of Transportation project to reconstruct bridges over Route 11.

Traffic will be detoured via Raccoon Road, New Road and state Route 46.

Liberty hearing planned

LIBERTY — Township officials will have a second public hearing to discuss a potential contract with a single trash hauler to replace the three haulers currently operating.

The hearing will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the township administration building. Trustees have the item on the agenda for a regular meeting to take place after the public hearing.

Park to honor resident

YOUNGSTOWN — The city’s park and recreation commission is honoring a city resident by renaming the Oak-Ken Playground after her. An official dedication of the Irma N. Davis Park on the corner of Oak Hill and Kenmore avenues on the city’s South Side will be at 10 a.m. Monday.

Davis is the executive director and founder of the Needle’s Eye Christian Counseling Center on Kenmore. Needle’s Eye focuses on helping those with alcohol and drug addictions.

Science workshop set

CORTLAND — The Trumbull Soil and Water Conservation District will host a Project WET science workshop for educators and parents from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 30 at Trumbull Agriculture and Family Education Center, 520 West Main St.

Project WET is a collection of water-related activities that are hands-on, easy to use and fun for pupils in grades K–12. The lessons have been correlated to the state content standards in science and social studies and complement classroom curriculum. All county teachers, home-schoolers, Scout and youth leaders are encouraged to attend. Six continuing-education contact hours can be earned.

The cost for the workshop is $25, which includes the Project WET Curriculum and Activity Guide, program supplies, lunch and morning refreshments.
