Sachire promoted

SOUTH BEND, Ind.— Canfield High graduate Ryan Sachire was promoted to associate head coach for the University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team.

Sachire, a former state champion at Canfield who was a three-time All-America at Notre Dame, recently finished his second year of coaching for the Irish.

He helped the Irish capture the Big East title this season and has been a major factor in the school’s recruiting.

Sachire ended his pro career in 2005 and was an assistant at Baylor in 2005-06, helping the Bears reach the semifinals of the NCAA Championship.

Brode takes gold

CANFIELD — Dustin Brode won a gold medal in the shot put at a Junior Olympics track field meet held at Washington Courthouse.

He also took fourth place in the discus and in the hammer throw.

Brode will now compete in a national meet in Omaha, Nebraska.

Wins golf title

BOARDMAN — Brian Terlesky of Boardman teamed up with Joey Lucci of Columbiana to win the 8-10 year old division of the two-man scramble recently at Clearview Golf Course.

Swim meet today

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Swim League relay meet will be contested today at the Logan Swim and Tennis Club, beginning at 9 a.m.

Boys and girls, aged 6 and over, are scheduled to swim.

Steelers sign pair

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers reached three-year agreements Friday with two more draft picks, safety Ryan Mundy of West Virginia and linebacker Mike Humpal of Iowa.

Both players were sixth-round draft picks and agreed to the NFL’s minimum salaries each season.

The agreements leave the Steelers with two unsigned picks: first-rounder Rashard Mendenhall, the former Illinois running back, and second-rounder Limas Sweed, a wide receiver from Texas.

The Steelers open training camp July 27 in Latrobe, Pa.

Henry reportedly tests positive

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Travis Henry’s precipitous fall from grace during the past year reportedly has reached another low.

According to a report on KDVR-TV’s Web site, the former Denver Broncos running back tested positive for marijuana earlier this year and faces a one-year suspension by the NFL.

Henry beat the NFL on an appeal of a positive drug test for marijuana last year and avoided a suspension.

The report said Henry’s positive marijuana test came in May, just before his release June 2.

Walls won’t play

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Starting cornerback Darrin Walls will not play for Notre Dame next season and wide receiver D.J. Hord has decided not to return for his senior season.

Walls plans to take the fall semester off for personal reasons and return home to Pittsburgh following the end of summer school, coach Charlie Weis said Friday.
