Penguin’s program best in nation
YOUNGSTOWN — The 2007 edition of the Youngstown State Football Game Program, “Penguin Power” was named the Best In the Nation by College Sports Information Directors of America. The annual awards were presented at the CoSIDA workshop which was held recently in Tampa, Fla.
It is the fourth time in seven years that Penguin Power has been selected as the FCS’s best gameday program. The book was honored as the nation’s best in 2001, 2002 and 2006 previously. The 2007-edition featured an impressive 184 pages and for the first time ever had different covers for each home game. The book also featured special inserts on the 25-year history of Stambaugh Stadium.
The Youngstown State sports information and marketing staffs handle all content, editing and design for the book.

Howland summer youth camps set
HOWLAND — The Howland Township Summer Youth Sport and Recreation Program has scheduled tennis and golf camps from 9 a.m. to noon the week of July 14 through 18.
The tennis camp will be at Howland High school for children 6 to 9. Bring athletic shoes, a can of tennis balls and a racquet if you have one.
A golf camp will be at Howland Township Park for children 10 to 13. Bring athletic clothes and athletic shoes.
Registration forms are available at the township administration building, 205 Niles-Cortland Road, N.E., 44484.
Registration fee is $20 for residents and $35 for nonresidents. Each camp provides a T-shirt. Checks should be made payable to Summer Youth Sport and Rec Program and mailed or dropped off at the township administration building. For more information, call (330) 856-2340.
Christmas in July at Sharon Speedway
HARTFORD — The calendar may say it is July but this Saturday it will be Christmas at the Sharon Speedway. This week’s “Fantastic Five” racing program will feature loads of Christmas gifts for fans of all ages. In addition Santa Claus will make the long tow down from the North Pole to check on all of the Sharon Speedway racing fans. Unfortunately the warmer summer temperatures will not permit Rudolph and the other reindeer to attend!!
In addition the drivers in the Tom’s Sewer and Drain E-Mod Division will be signing autographs at intermission. Fans will have the opportunity to meet their favorite E-Mod drivers, see the cars up close and of course get driver autographs. The race teams always have photo cards, candy, checkered flags and an assortment of other items to give to the fans.
Pit Gates open at 3:00PM with the Grandstand Gates opening at 4:00PM. The first green flag will wave promptly at 6 p.m.
Witmer captures PGA junior event
WARRENSVILLE HEIGHTS — Kevin Miller of Dover and Ariel Witmer of North Lima won the 2008 Northern Ohio Junior PGA Championship Wednesday at Hawthorne Valley Country Club in Solon.
By winning the boys’ and girls’ divisions respectively, Miller and Witmer qualified for the 33rd Junior PGA Championship, August 13-16, at TPC River’s Bend in Cincinnati.
Miller, 17, posted a final-round 69 for a two-day total of 142 and a 9-stroke victory over Eric Dowiatt of Ashland. Witmer, 17, had a final-round 77 for a two-day total of 157 and won a playoff with a birdie on the first hole.
Steelers sign deal with third-round pick
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers signed a three-year deal with linebacker Bruce Davis, the team’s third-round draft pick.
The 6-2, 252-pound Davis was selected 88th overall by the Steelers out of UCLA.
Crow to sing national anthem
NEW YORK — The All-Stars of music are coming to Yankee Stadium, too.
Nine-time Grammy winner Sheryl Crow will sing the national anthem before baseball’s All-Star game on Tuesday night.
