One dies, another hurt in Warren car accident

WARREN — A 19-year-old woman is dead and her 20-year-old passenger seriously injured after both women were ejected from their car on Pine Street near the entrance to Warren Consolidated Industries early Wednesday.

Jaleesa P. Davis of Deerfield Street, the driver, was dead at the scene. Her passenger, Kashea Nelson of Draper Avenue Southeast, was listed in stable condition Wednesday evening at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.

Warren police said the four-door car was speeding north on Pine when it struck a curb on the right side of the road, causing it to roll over and strike a utility pole, which cut the vehicle into two parts. The car was divided at the firewall just in front of the passenger compartment.

Apparently neither woman was wearing a seat belt during the 2:12 a.m. accident, said Sgt. Larry Salvato, the department’s traffic commissioner.

Development to sell lots for new homes

YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County Planning Commission gave the approval Wednesday to CTW Development to sell lots for the construction of homes in a new development called Winstead Crossing, located within the Westford Lifestyle Community in Canfield.

The Westford Community is visible off U.S. Route 224, behind Wendy’s and Panera Bread.

There are already about 10 reservations for lots in the new development, which has a total of 39 available, said Chuck Whitman, president of CTM Development.

Winstead Crossing will be a gated community of single-family homes costing near $400,000 each and is one of eight housing developments slated to be part of the 400-acre Westford complex, which includes Kennsington Golf Course and a retail/office complex.

A groundbreaking ceremony will most likely take place within two weeks, Whitman said.

Robber sentenced

YOUNGSTOWN — A South Side man is going to prison for four years for robbing a discount store.

Judge Maureen A. Sweeney of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court imposed that sentence Tuesday on Willie A. Hendrix, 30, of West Indianola Avenue, who pleaded guilty to the Feb. 12 aggravated robbery of the Family Dollar store, 2708 Glenwood Ave.

The store manager said the handgun-toting robber escaped with $133. Following a tip from a witness and fresh tracks in the snow, police went to a house in the 2700 block of nearby Reel Avenue, where they arrested Hendrix. Police said Hendrix admitted robbing the store.

Units stolen downtown

YOUNGSTOWN — Two air conditioning condenser/furnace units that had been removed from the roof of a building at 360 E. Federal St. in order to make repairs were stolen, police said. The value is listed as $13,500.

A construction manager said the units were placed in the parking lot of the building June 30 and he discovered them missing Tuesday. He said that while the units were in the parking lot, several people stopped by and asked about scrapping them.

Guard band to perform

NORTH LIMA — The Beaver Township Park Board is presenting a performance by the Air National Guard Band of the Great Lakes at 6:30 p.m. today at Woodworth Park. The park is on Luther Avenue, off East Western Reserve Road between Market Street and Southern Boulevard.

Admission is free. Because seating is limited, attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs. The concert will be moved to the South Range High School auditorium if it rains.

“This is a great opportunity for our local residents to experience a performance by the Air National Guard Band,” said Scott Conway, Beaver Township park administrator.

The band has performed in Germany, Hungary, Spain, Panama and England.
