TRANSPLANTS

Fast facts

Some transplant information:

In Ohio, 2,989 men, women and children are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant — 2,314 for a kidney; 368 for a liver; 63 for a pancreas; 68 for a kidney/pancreas; 79 for a heart; 91 for a lung; 1 for a heart/lung; and 5 for an intestine.

A single tissue donor can save or enhance the lives of up to 50 people.

35 percent of patients awaiting kidney transplants are African American.

An average of 19 patients die every day while waiting, simply because the organ they needed did not become available in time.

On average, 132 people are added to the nation’s organ transplant waiting list each day — one every 11 minutes.

People of all ages and medical histories should consider themselves potential donors. Your medical condition at the time of death will determine what organs and tissue can be donated.
