Tax-related investigation likely in case

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Federal agents who have subpoenaed wage and payroll records of former county treasurer Gary Felasco are likely doing an income-tax-related investigation, said county controller David Gettings.

“That’s my guess,” said Gettings, whose office received a subpoena Thursday. County Treasurer Richard Rapone’s office also has received one. The offices have until July 22 to turn over the records.

Gettings said a special agent from the U.S. Department of the Treasury delivered the subpoena to his office. He said the agent is not likely looking for anything but tax-related information.

“They may already have information,” Gettings said, but the Treasury Department is probably making sure that what Felasco said he was paid is the same as what the county said he was paid.

Felasco, who was in his third term as treasurer, was convicted in August 2006 of stealing $170,000 of tax money from the treasurer’s office.
