VINDICATOR STAFF REPORT
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The Mahoning Valley Scrappers took advantage of some wildness from the Brooklyn pitchers and coasted to an 8-1 victory over the Cyclones at KeySpan Park Monday afternoon before nearly 8,000 fans in a New York-Penn League contest.
The Scrappers (9-12) scored five runs in the fifth inning without getting a hit as the Cyclones’ pitchers issued seven straight walks in the inning to force in four runs, the fifth coming on a ground ball out.
Mahoning Valley only had four hits in the contest, but one was a two-run homer by Juan Valdes in the third inning, the Scrappers’ fifth of the season and second in two games, while another was an RBI double by Walter Diaz in the top of the ninth inning.
P.J. Zocchi started for the Scrappers and pitched the first five innings to pick up his first win of the season. He allowed five hits, walked three and struck out one. He allowed the Cyclones’ only run in the fourth inning.
Four Mahoning Valley relievers all pitched one inning each as Mike McGuire, Brian Grening, Anilin Martinez and Carlos Arias blanked the Cyclones over the final four frames and allowed just three hits.
The Scrappers will have a day off today and then begin a six-game home stretch Wednesday when they play host to the Vermont Lake Monsters in a 7:05 p.m. start at Eastwood Field.
