Man arrested in shooting of immigrant
CLEVELAND (AP) — A security camera has led to the arrest of a Cleveland man in the service-station shooting of a Muslim Uzbekistan immigrant in an attack investigated as a possible hate crime.
Cleveland police say 18-year-old William Neal was charged Monday with felonious assault in the June 20 attack on 49-year-old Fazliddin Yakubov.
Yakubov was shot three times. He is expected to recover.
The victim may have been mistaken as Arab because he spoke Uzbek and recited a Muslim prayer in Arabic when he became frightened by people milling around the gas station. Police say they didn’t have enough evidence to file hate-crime charges.
Court records do not list an attorney for the suspect.
