Astro Falcons win to advance to Class B finals


The Falcons held off Dave Sugar, 7-6, to advance against R&J Trucking.

STRUTHERS — Astro Falcons held off a late Dave Sugar rally in the bottom of the seventh, winning 7-6 to clinch the Class B semifinal series in two games Monday night at Cene Park.

Astro will face R J Trucking in the best-of-5 championship series, starting with a doubleheader on Cene 1 today at 6 p.m.

Monday, Ryan Rovnak and Jared Turocy had three hits each for Astro, while Trent Vallinger added two.

TJ Rosenberg drove home three runs while Jared Kirin went the first six innings for the win.

Dan Banna and losing pitcher Patrick O’Brien had two hits each for Dave Sugar.

STRUTHERS — Astro Falcons defeated Livi Steel, 8-5, at Cene Park to win their Class Little b series 2-0.

Astro advanced to face Rondinelli Tuxedo in the best-of-five championship series.

Games one and two are scheduled for today starting at 6 p.m. on Cene 2.

Kyle Allen drove home two runs for Astro while Raul Pizzaro tossed 22‚Ñ3 innings of scoreless relief for the win with four strikeouts.

Will Frazier had two hits for Livi Steel.

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Metros played a pair of doubleheaders over the weekend splitting with the Pittsburgh Pandas and dropping a pair to Washington, Pa.

In the opener against the Pandas, the Metros scored five times in the fourth inning en route to a 9-3 victory as Arman Johnson had three hits including a double and Jim Pasquine added two hits with a double.

In the second game the Pandas scored four runs early and then added six more in the sixth to post a 10-2 victory.

The winners had 11 hits including three by Drew Bosco, while Dom Sylvestri and Mike Hoelzel each had two for Metros.

In the opener with Washington, the Metros trailed 6-1 before scoring four runs in the sixth inning, but couldn’t pull out a win, losing 7-5.

YSU standout John Koehnlein led the winners with two hits and two RBIs, while John Leber had a double and a home run.

Anthony Porter had two hits for Metros.

In the nightcap, Washington scored twice in the top of the seventh to pull out a 9-8 victory.

Each team had 14 hits.

Leber and Lee Bainbridge each homered for the winners while Koehnlein had three hits and drove in two runs.

Matt Yarab had three hits including a double and triple and drove in three for the Metros.

WARREN — John Swipas drove in a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with a double as the Mahoning Valley Knights pulled out a 6-4 victory over the Hickory Hornets.

Swipas and Wally Carpenter both had two hits for the Knights (14-2), while Mike Moroco had two hits including a double for the Hornets.

Hickory 4, PI I Express 1

Hickory scored three times in the first inning.

Moroco had a key double in the first inning.

Mike O’Neill and Mike Carnahan had two of the five hits for Express. Carnahan drove in the only run.

Andover 5, Champion 2

Rich DiBell had two hits including an RBI double to lead the Angels.

Adam Miller and Joe Coeder combined to scatter four hits with Miller getting the mound win.

Rob Martin also doubled for the Angels, while Brandon Keck had a double for the Marlins.

Yard Cardinals 12, Brewmasters 1

Brian Kochunas pitched a five hitter and also had a two-run homer as Yard Cardinals cruised to an easy victory over the Brewmasters.

The Cardinals pounded out 17 hits including three by Greg Rowland and Nick Dragash, while Bernie Novotny added three RBIs.
