Ryder Cup

CANTON — The First Tee of Mahoning Valley captured it second consecutive First Tee Ryder Cup at historic Clearview Golf Club.

Chapters from Cleveland, Canton, Akron, Toledo and Youngstown-Warren competed.

Medalist winners in the 18 hole stroke play were Jake Fait from Boardman and Angela Molaskey from Poland.

Brian Terlesky and Joe Lucci captured first place in the two man scramble with an even par round for 9 holes. The other format was the two man alternate shot.

LPGA Pro Renee Powell hosted the event.

The First Tee of Mahoning Valley is a non-profit youth development program that teaches life skills such as honesty and perseverance through the game of golf.

Sports camp set

GIRARD — The Creekside Golf Dome and Sports Complex will be conducting its first all sports camp (flag football, soccer, and baseball) beginning July 19.

The camp will be held on four consecutive Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. on July 19th-August 9th.

Cost is $60.00 per child and is limited to the first 20 to sign up. The camp is for children in grades 4-7.

Singleton swims well

OMAHA, Neb. — Former Mount Union College men’s swimmer Eddis Singleton finished tied for 20th place in the preliminaries of the 2008 US Olympic Trails Friday at the Quest Center in Omaha, Nebraska.

Singleton’s mark of 22.73 left him just four spots shy of the semifinals.

Stars beat Mystics

WASHINGTON — After watching the San Antonio Silver Stars’ double-digit, second-half lead fade into a one-point deficit, Becky Hammon and Sophia Young got aggressive.

Hammon scored a season-high 28 points and combined with Young to score San Antonio’s final 24 points and the Silver Stars held off the Washington Mystics for a 83-75 win on Sunday.

After the Mystics erased San Antonio’s 12-point lead, Hammon hit a 3-pointer with 5:54 left to give the Western Conference-leading Silver Stars (12-6) a 63-61 lead. From there she and Young, who scored 23 points, had their way.

Dwyer Stakes

NEW YORK — Mint Lane got a second-straight stakes victory Sunday, posting a pacesetting win in the $200,000 Dwyer Stakes at Belmont.

The Dwyer is the first major 3-year-old race in New York following the Belmont Stakes. Mint Lane could be a divisional factor in the second half of the year.

Mint Lane earned a second straight stakes win following his victory in Belmont’s Postponed Stakes and improved to 4-for-9.

Griffin upsets Jackson

LAS VEGAS — Forrest Griffin upset light heavyweight champion Quinton (Rampage) Jackson on Saturday night, winning a five-round unanimous decision at UFC 86.

Griffin (16-4) used his movement, reach and kicks to slow Jackson (28-7) and survived the champion’s power shots in an action-packed mixed martial arts fight at Mandalay Bay Events Center.

Valverde keeps lead

SAINT-BRIEUC, France — With villagers calling out to him as he sped through the countryside, Alejandro Valverde kept his lead in the Tour de France on Sunday and basked in the honor of wearing the yellow jersey.

The Spaniard held back as Norwegian sprint specialist Thor Hushovd won the second stage in a sprint in completing the 102-mile ride in Brittany from Auray to Saint-Brieuc.

KARACHI, Pakistan — Cricket’s governing body said Sunday it will not to risk anyone’s safety during an eight-nation tournament in September in Pakistan, a promise that came the same day a suicide bomber killed at least 15 people in Islamabad.

The attack targeted a police station in the capital adjacent to Rawalpindi, one of three Pakistani cities to stage Champions Trophy matches. Lahore and Karachi are the others.
