Scrappers end loss streak in Brooklyn

Ramon Hernandez’ grand slam homer in the 10th was the big blow.

VINDICATOR STAFF/WIRE REPORT

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The Mahoning Valley Scrappers snapped a three-game losing streak, scoring five runs in the top of the 10th inning to defeat the Brooklyn Cyclones, 6-1, Saturday night at KeySpan Park.

The Scrappers took the lead in the 10th when Juan Valdes doubled to lead off the inning and then scored on a Brooklyn error, but the big blow came following a pair of walks when pinch-hitter Ramon Hernandez belted a grand slam down the left field line.

It was Hernandez’s second home run of the season, but only the fourth for the Scrappers this year.

Daniel Morales pitched an inning and two-thirds to pick up his second win of the season, while Garrett Rieck worked a perfect 10th inning. Starting pitcher Brad Hinkle threw five good innings allowing just three hits and one run.

Mahoning Valley (8-11) fell behind early when Brooklyn scored in the fourth on a solo home run by Joshua Satin, but tied the game in the sixth on an RBI single by Isaias Velasquez.

Valdes had three hits to lead the Scrappers, while Walter Diaz added a pair.

The teams will play the second game of their series today at 5:05 p.m.
