NEW YORK — Mariano Rivera pitched himself in and out of trouble, escaping a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the ninth inning to preserve the Yankees’ victory. After Mike Mussina pitched six shutout innings, Rivera took over with a 2-0 lead. The Red Sox quickly scored a run and were poised to get more, but Rivera struck out Coco Crisp, got Jason Varitek on a popup and fanned Julio Lugo.

BALTIMORE — Ian Kinsler homered, German Duran and Michael Young had three hits apiece, and Texas used a sharp pitching performance by substitute starter Scott Feldman to beat Baltimore. Feldman (3-3) gave up three runs and five hits in six innings. The right-hander allowed three runs and three hits in the first, then blanked the Orioles on two hits until his departure.
White Sox 6, Athletics 1
CHICAGO — Gavin Floyd pitched 71‚Ñ3 scoreless innings to get his 10th victory and Nick Swisher, Brian Anderson and Alexei Ramirez homered for Chicago. Floyd (10-4), who was 8-10 in his career entering this season, allowed only three singles, walking three and striking out six.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Andy Sonnanstine pitched five-hit ball over seven innings as Tampa Bay won its sixth straight. Sonnanstine (10-3) won his fourth consecutive decision. J.P Howell pitched the eighth inning and Grant Balfour worked the ninth for his third save.

ST. LOUIS — Rick Ankiel slapped a two-run, two-out single to right field in the bottom of the ninth inning to cap a three-run rally for St. Louis. St. Louis rallied against Chicago closer Kerry Wood (4-2), who blew his fifth save of the season in 27 chances.
Mets 9, Phillies 4
PHILADELPHIA — Pinch-hitter Brian Schneider lined a tie-breaking double in the eighth inning as New York ended Philadelphia’s four-game winning streak. Schneider’s two-run double came with two outs. He was the Mets’ third pinch-hitter of the inning as they overcame a 4-3 deficit.

ATLANTA — Mark Loretta had three doubles and drove in four runs, and with Ty Wigginton batting leadoff Houston scored four times in the first two innings. The Astros snapped a four-game losing streak.
Reds 3, Nationals 2
CINCINNATI — Brandon Phillips singled in Jerry Hairston Jr. from second base in the ninth inning, lifting Cincinnati over Washington. Hairston led off with a single and stole second. Jay Bruce struck out and Ken Griffey Jr. was intentionally walked. Luis Ayala came in to face Phillips, who grounded a single through the hole into left field.
