About the car

Details on the Chevrolet Volt:

Range: 40 miles on battery power. 600 additional miles with a gasoline-powered generator.

Charging: Battery can be recharged in 6.5 hours by plugging into a standard outlet.

Cost: Charging will cost between 40 cents and 80 cents, depending on the time of day.

Fuel efficiency: No gas used the first 40 miles. When the generator kicks in, the car will get about 50 mpg.

Available: Starting in late 2010.

Seats: Four.

Cost: Early versions are expected to be close to $40,000, although General Motors is lobbying for a $7,000 tax credit. It also hopes to bring the cost down to less than $30,000.
