Penguins sign Cooke to replace Ruutu

PITTSBURGH — Free agent forward Matt Cooke signed a two-year contract with Pittsburgh on Saturday, replacing Jarkko Ruutu as the Penguins’ primary agitator.

The Penguins also offered Ruutu a two-year contract earlier this week but he signed a three-year deal with the Ottawa Senators after free agent bidding began.

The 5-foot-11, 205-pound Cooke had 10 goals, 13 assists and 91 penalty minutes in 78 games with the Vancouver Canucks and Washington Capitals last season.

Cooke, a left winger who usually plays on the penalty-killing unit, was acquired by Washington at the trade deadline for left winger Matt Pettinger.

Manhattan Marathon

NEW YORK — Australia’s John Van Wisse won the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim on Saturday, completing the 28.5-mile course around the island in 7 hours, 30 minutes, 15 seconds.

The 35-year-old Van Wisse also won the event in 2000.

Australia’s Penny Palfrey, the winner last year, was second in 7:35:05.

Tour de France

PLUMELEC, France — Alejandro Valverde is determined to contend for the Tour de France title. And the Tour de France is determined to run a clean race.

The Spaniard won the opening stage in a final sprint Saturday as cycling’s three-week showcase took a first step in trying to get beyond the doping scandals that for years have battered the race and the entire sport.

Valverde, fresh off winning last month’s Dauphine Libere and the Spanish championship, broke away from the pack at the end of the 123-mile leg.

US women beat Sweden soccer, 1-0

SKELLEFTEA, Sweden — Carli Lloyd scored on a deflected shot in the 39th minute Saturday to give the United States a 1-0 victory over Sweden in a women’s Olympic tuneup.

Lloyd dribbled past three defenders inside the box, then fired a low left-footed shot that glanced off Sara Thunebro’s leg and past goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl.

The victory was the United States’ 20th straight this year, including one on penalty kicks over Canada in the final of CONCACAF Olympic qualifying.

Ronaldo is hurting

MANCHESTER, England — Cristiano Ronaldo will likely miss the start of the season with Manchester United because of ankle surgery.

The Portugal winger is set to be operated on next week after playing with pain over the final two months of the English season and through the European Championship.
