YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State University has been awarded a $149,499 National Science Foundation grant to buy equipment for its general chemistry lab. The award was announced by U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th, who noted it came just a week after the head of the NSF, Dr. Arden L. Bement Jr., toured YSU’s chemistry department and cut a ribbon opening a new chemistry research lab.
Dr. Timothy Wagner, professor of chemistry, secured the grant and said it will provide funding for a new X-ray machine and a UV ray-visible spectrometer to be used by undergraduate students in research projects.
Museum open Sunday
NILES — The Niles Historical Society invites the public to tour its museum from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday for the organization’s monthly open house.
Guests can explore area history in the Ward-Thomas Museum at 503 Brown St. There, docents will lead visitors through the main house, but guests are also welcome in the barn, gardens, greenhouse and out-buildings.
Early-bird walk set
ALLIANCE — The John T. Huston-Dr. John D. Brumbaugh Nature Center of Mount Union College is sponsoring an early-bird walk at 8 a.m. Sunday.
Join Chuck McClaugherty, professor of biology and center director, on a walk to discover what birds can be spotted on the morning walk. No registration is required, but be sure to dress for the weather. The center is located six miles south of Mount Union College on Daniel Street, just off state Route 183.
MYCAP registration
YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning-Youngstown Community Action Partnership Head Start program will have enrollment for the 2008-09 school year.
The main location for enrolling children is at 101 E. Federal St. between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
In addition, MYCAP will have special Enrollment Festivals with activities for the children, face painting, gifts and refreshments.
The festivals will be at 101 E. Federal St. from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 11 and 25 and Aug. 8, 22 and 29.
Those bringing children to register should have the child’s birth certificate and immunization record, parental photo identification and income documentation, Social Security cards for all family members, medical or insurance cards and custody papers if applicable.
Mower recovered
YOUNGSTOWN — A man pushing a lawn mower down the sidewalk on Cornell Avenue around 3 a.m. Thursday made sense to police who connected it to a break-in call on the street.
Officers arrested David McComb, 35, of Tampa Avenue, on a charge of breaking and entering. He was arraigned today in municipal court and bond was set at $100,000. He will be back in court for a preliminary hearing Friday.
The mower owner told police that he heard someone in his unattached garage about 2:50 a.m. and then the sound of something being dragged out the garage’s side door that had been accidentally left unlocked.
Summer camp vacancies
SANDY LAKE, Pa. — McKeever Center, 55 McKeever Lane, has two summer camps filled with outdoor activities for youths 10 to 14.
The Earthkeepers Camp, for 10- to 11-year-olds, is from Wednesday through Friday, and the five-day Adventure Camp for 12- to 14-year-olds is from July 14-18.

Youth police academies
YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Police Department’s Youth Police Academies will start July 15.
The academies will last five weeks, one day a week from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for three age groups. Age 8-11 will meet Tuesdays; age 12-14, Wednesdays; and 15-17, Thursdays.
