About one million American soldiers married women from 50 countries.
100,000 war brides were British.
150,000 to 200,000 were from continental Europe.
16,000 were from Australia and New Zealand.
50,000 to 100,000 came from Far East countries, including Japan.
1945: U.S. Congress passed the War Brides Act, Public Law 271, which allowed the entrance of alien wives and minor children into the U.S.
1946: First arrival of war brides. Most traveled by way of former troop or hospital ships to their new homes in the U.S.
