Trustees hire for work on old Fairfield school
The township can soon move forward with its plan to demolish all or a portion of the building.
COLUMBIANA — Fairfield Township trustees on Wednesday hired an area company to complete the hazardous material abatement project at the old Fairfield High School.
The former school building, once part of the Crestview School District, is one of the buildings the township owns at the government center on Fairfield School Road.
At the recommendation of architect Mike Fagan, the township agreed to pay Environmental Protection Systems LLC of Girard $274,300 to remove asbestos at the site. Fagan, of Olsavsky Jaminet in Youngstown, said he was happy with the bid, which was lower than the original estimate of $325,000.
Fagan said he expects the work to be started within the next few weeks and to take about 60 days to finish. He said once that project is done, the township can move forward with its plan to demolish all or a portion of the building. The trustees have not yet decided whether to raze the gymnasium. Fagan said he is prepared to advertise for bids for the demolition project.
In other matters, the trustees hired Chamberlin Surveying of Columbiana to determine the boundaries at the Zion Hill Cemetery on Kirk Road. Last month the trustees authorized road supervisor Dennis Farmer to seek out and hire a land surveyor, providing the fee doesn’t exceed $500. Farmer said Chamberlin agreed to survey the land for $500 or less. Farmer said the cemetery needs a proper driveway and he recommended having the property lines determined before beginning the project to avoid encroaching on adjacent properties.
The current access to the cemetery is covered with dirt and grass, he noted.
The trustees agreed to buy a new dump truck through the Ohio Department of Transportation’s Cooperative Purchasing Program, pending ODOT’s written authorization of the purchase. The estimated cost of the 2009 truck, a 7400 International, excluding accessories is $56,600.
The trustees plan to hold a budget work session at 9 a.m. July 12 at the government center. They said they will not take any action at that session, but intend to vote on whether to adopt next year’s budget at their regular meeting at 7 p.m. July 17.
