Herbstreit Challenge

CANTON — The Cardinal Mooney and Howland high school football teams will be in action in the Kirk Herbstreit Challenge over Labor Day.

On August 30 Howland faces Klein Forest (Texas) at 11 a.m. and at 5 p.m. Mooney takes on Covington Catholic (Kentucky). Both games are at the Pro Football Hall of Fame field.

Ague goes unbeaten

AUSTINTOWN — Shawn Ague went undefeated through nine matches to win a gold medal and lead the Austintown Fitch High School wrestling team to an eleventh place finish in the AAU national meet at Disney World.

There were 64 prep teams competing in the five-day dual meet.

Jake Peterson and Louis Greco each went 8-1 to win silver medals. Winning bronze medals with 7-2 records were Dustin Welsh, Joe Perkins and Chris Miller.

State bowling

NILES – Six members of the Trumbull County Fairhaven Special Olympics bowling team won honors at the State Special Olympics Summer Games in Columbus.

Those honored were John Aho, Vienna Township, and Kathy Kinney, McDonald, gold medals; Donna Miller, Warren, and Kaylen Ralston, Girard, silver medals; Michael Kocholek, Warren, bronze medal; and Brian Carney, Warren, fourth-place ribbon.

Phantoms to play

FRISCO, TX. — The Mahoning Valley Phantoms will compete in the North American Hockey League Showcase Tournament here on Sept. 17-20.

On Sept. 17 the Phantoms face Owatonna at 3:15 p.m. and the following day they meet North Iowa at 6:30 p.m.

The third day the Phantoms go against Springfield at 3:15 p.m.

Red Bulls win 26-0

The Ohio Red Bulls defeated the Beaver County Warriors 26-0 to post their third win in as many starts.

Jerome Betts gave the Bulls a 6-0 lead with a 50-yard punt return and quarterback Craig Ladson added 65 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Jason Hewlett recorded 11 tackles and five sacks as the Warriors (1-2) were held to 78 total yards.

‘Inside Boxing’

YOUNGSTOWN — Tonight’s “Inside Boxing” broadcast on WBBW-1240 will take place at the East Side Civics on South Ave. from 5-7.

Host Mike Cefalde will be joined by former Fitch High athletes Scott Jones and Lou Chine in honoring longtime Fitch baseball coach Rich Coppola, a Struthers product who played received a scholarship to Arizona State for baseball and basketball. Coppola’s coaching career started in 1968.

Jurevicus under knife

CLEVELAND — Browns wide receiver Joe Jurevicius had his second knee surgery since January, a procedure that could prevent him from reporting to training camp on time.

The 33-year-old had 50 catches for 614 yards and three touchdowns last season.

Marshall in action

CLEVELAND — Willis Marshall (Youngstown State) will compete with the Cleveland Gladiators against the Georgia Force in the division round of the Arena League playoffs on July 7.

Hockey deals

COLUMBUS — Seeking to add experience to one of the NHL’s youngest rosters, the Columbus Blue Jackets acquired winger Raffi Torres from the Edmonton Oilers for promising center Gilbert Brule.

Torres, 26, gives the Blue Jackets a skilled hand who has three full seasons and parts of three others in the league. He missed most of last season after knee surgery and is still rehabbing the injury.

The Blue Jackets have lost 30-something veterans Sergei Fedorov, Adam Foote and Jody Shelley through trades and are not planning on re-signing David Vyborny.

Penguins keep Dupuis

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins signed forward Pascal Dupuis to a three-year contract Tuesday.

The 29-year-old Dupuis and star winger Marian Hossa came to the Penguins in a trading deadline deal from Atlanta.

Hossa has so far rebuffed the Penguins and is expected to fetch more on the free agent market than $7 million a year.
