Scrappers notebook \ From Eastwood Field

Feeding frenzy: Monday was the first night for the Scrappers’ “All you can eat” promotion, which allows fans to eat their fill for $10. The promotion includes specified food and soft drinks and is available for all Monday home games. GM Dave Smith was encouraged by the response, particularly since the gloomy weather made for a small crowd. “Close to 250 people took advantage of it,” he said. Food includes hot dogs, hamburgers, grilled chicken, Italian sausage, kielbasa, chips, peanuts, popcorn and candy bars.

Weather woes: Eastwood Field got hit by a brief shower just before the game and the tarp was on the field until about an hour before game time. Smith said the team has had the tarp on the field for all eight home games this season. “We we were looking at the forecast for [today] and they’re calling for 70s and sun,” said Smith, who said there’s been rain either before the game or during the game for every home date. “I think it’s the first day we won’t have to check the Weather Channel.”

Starting pitcher: Mahoning Valley’s Brad Hinkle made his third start of the season and first at home. In his last start against Auburn, he worked 42‚Ñ3 innings, surrendering eight hits and four earned runs while walking none and striking out one. He entered Monday’s game 0-0 with a 5.19 ERA in 82‚Ñ3 innings. Hinkle is from Spring Arbor, Mich., and signed as a minor league free agent.
