Amish woman burned June 14 dies in hospital


NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — An Amish woman who was severely burned in an explosion June 14 died Sunday at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office said Ada Kurtz, 25, died of sepsis after 69 percent of her body was burned.

Kurtz, of 942 Pulaski-Mercer Road, was using a wood-burning water heater at her home when it exploded, said Gary Wagner, New Wilmington fire chief.

He said the Amish light wood under a kettle using kerosene as an accelerant. He said it appears that Kurtz mistakenly used gasoline instead.
