Williams reaches milestone


HOWLAND — Alexa Williams become the fourth Howland High girls basketball player to reach 1,000 points for her career, as she led the Tigers past Struthers, 60-53, Wednesday night in a Metro Athletic Conference game.

Williams, a 6-foot-1 senior forward who is headed to Lehigh University on a basketball scholarship, scored 19 points to reach 1,000 exactly. She also had 10 rebounds and 11 blocks.

Kelly Barzak chipped in with 15 points, Allie Airhart with eight points and Megan Long with six and three assists and as many steals to aid Howland (15-3, 11-2 MAC), which made 23-for-49 from the field.

Ashley Galbraith had 16 points and five rebounds and Dana Mathews 13 points to lead Struthers (10-6, 5-6 MAC).

Salem 41, Canfield 36

SALEM — Sophomore Amy Scullion scored a game-high 18 points and Salem outscored Canfield 22-16 in the second half to hand the Cardinals their second loss of the season and first in the league.

Senior Katie Scullion added 10 points for the Quakers (11-6, 8-3), who won despite committing 18 turnovers.

Bryanne Halfhill scored 12 points for Canfield (15-2, 10-1), which defeated Salem 65-39 in the teams’ first meeting. Pitt recruit Kate Popovec added six points and eight rebounds.

East Liverpool 61, Poland 53

POLAND — Courtney Harrison had 11 of her 27 points in the third quarter, while Brittany Tomaselli added 22 points for the Potters (9-7, 5-5 MAC).

Senior Michelle Benson had 14 points, Missy Haug, a junior, scored 12 and Leanna Yeager, a sophomore, had 10 for the Bulldogs (4-13, 3-8).

Campbell 42, Niles 38, OT

CAMPBELL — Campbell won its first game of the season in the MAC, thanks to a 9-5 scoring advantage in overtime.

Nate-tay Jones-Logan scored 15 points, including three 3-point goals, and Jayaira Grihm had 13 points to lead the Red Devils (3-13, 1-10 MAC), while Danielle Bell added nine. Campbell made 14-for-25 from the field.

Natalie Thomas tallied 13 points, including three 3-point goals, and Megan McDermott added 11 points to spark Niles (6-12, 2-10 MAC), while Amanda Binion contributed eight.

Western Reserve 37, Southern 26

SALINEVILLE — Ellie Sanders scored 17 points to lead Western Reserve (6-13, 6-7 ITCL Tier Two), which bounced back from a 2-0 deficit after the first quarter.

The Blue Devils took a 12-6 halftime lead and then built a 29-13 advantage after three quarters.

Emily Smith had seven points for Southern (1-18, 0-13).

Boys

MASSILLON — Massillon Perry’s 6-11 senior center Kenny Frease, a Xavier recruit, scored 19 points and Andy Reed added 10 for the Panthers (14-2), who upended Fitch 50-37 in a Federal League quarterfinal game.

The game was a conclusion of Tuesday’s contest, which was postponed due to a blackout.

Jon Ballard scored 15 points for Fitch (2-14), which was outrebounded 33-8.

The Falcons will play at GlenOak at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

CVCA 62, Ursuline 46

CUYAHOGA FALLS — Jamel Turner had 14 points and 10 rebounds in Ursuline’s loss Tuesday night.

Dominique Cole added 10 points for the Irish (9-8), who trailed 24-13 at halftime.

South Range 64, Mineral Ridge 55

MINERAL RIDGE — Joe Mihan led South Range with 17 points in an Inter Tri-County League Tier One game Tuesday night.

A.J. Ondrey scored 12 points for the Raiders (7-11, 4-8 ITCL), who trailed 27-17 at halftime but tied the score at 33 after three periods, and outscored Mineral Ridge 31-24 in the fourth quarter.

T.J. Bevilacqua scored a game-high 24 points for the Rams (7-9, 5-7), while Zack Kiger added 12.
