Boardman upends Lake in Federal League game


Fitch’s game against Perry was postponed due to a blackout.

UNIONTOWN — The Boardman High boys basketball team rallied from a 39-36 deficit after three quarters to beat host Uniontown Lake 50-49 in the opening round of the Federal League tournament on Tuesday.

With six seconds remaining and the Blue Streaks in-bounding the ball, Boardman’s defense got a hand on a shot by Lake, which was unsuccessful. The Spartans converted 7 of 10 from the line in the final period, including 4 of 4 by J.T. Moore.

The Spartans (7-9, 2-6) advance to play at North Canton Hoover on Friday in a league semifinal.

Junior Devron Martin had 18 points for the Spartans, who lost to Hoover earlier this season, 58-54.

T. Groot had 19 points for Lake (10-7, 5-3).

Perry 37, Fitch 20, ppd.

MASSILLON — High winds led to a blackout that forced postponement of the final 7:02 of Tuesday’s Fitch-Perry Federal League boys basketball quarterfinal game. The remainder of the game will be played tonight at 6 at Perry High.

“The power had already gone off three times in the second half,” Perry coach Rob Toth said. “After the fourth time, the police told us it wouldn’t be coming back on again for quite a while. Our whole neighborhood here was dark.”

No admission will be charged for tonight’s contest.

Youngstown Christian 79

YOUNGSTOWN — The Cowboys put five players in double figures and outlasted Youngstown Christian.

The Cowboys (4-12) were led by Tyray Helms with 21 points while Mike Parker and James Burns added 18 and 16 respectively while Brennan Hudson and Aaron Poindexter each had 12.

Youngstown Christian (10-6) was led by Alonzo Johnson with 24 points while David Colbert added 21 and John Pecchia had 19.

Poland 98, Struthers 71

STRUTHERS — Ben Donlow’s 26 points led the undefeated Bulldogs (15-0, 10-0 Metro Athletic Conference).

Niko Fatimus hit six 3-pointers for his 18 points while Anthony Defelice scored 12 and made 10 assists.

David Baker pulled down 14 of Poland’s 57 rebounds. Ben Umbel made five of his team’s 19 steals.

For the Wildcats (5-11, 1-9), Jordan Morell netted 15, R.J. Ragan had 14 and Keith Karas 13.

Howland 59, E. Liverpool 47

EAST LIVERPOOL — Jared Kirin led a trio of players in double figures with 23 points as the Tigers (11-5, 6-4 MAC) rebounded from Friday’s loss to Canfield.

Tyler Scott had 13 points and 10 of his team’s 35 rebounds, while Nathan Cope added 10 points for the winners, who sank 24 of 34 free throws.

Nathan Howard’s 13 points paced East Liverpool, which had 22 rebounds.

Salem 49, Niles 45

SALEM — Salem cruised though three quarters and then held off a late rally by Niles to post the win.

The Quakers (9-7, 4-7 MAC) were led by Austen Hutton and Zack O’Brien with 11 points apiece, while Phil Bennett added eight rebounds.

Niles (6-10, 3-7) got 13 points from Dan Rosenberger and 12 from Larry Sussman, who also added eight rebounds. Ryan Franz had 11 points that included three 3-point goals.

West Branch 64, Louisville 52

LOUISVILLE — West Branch, trailing most of the game, went on a 20-5 run with just under five minutes remaining to pull past Louisville.

The Warriors (10-6, 7-5 Northeastern Buckeye Conference) hit 18 of 22 free throws and were led by Vic Pappas with 17 points and Michael Sellaroli with 16. Serraroli was 8-for-8 from the charity stripe.

Louisville (5-10, 2-7) was led by Matt Schooley with 20 points.
