12-year-old girl shot to death, mom hurt

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A 12-year-old girl was fatally shot and her mother wounded Monday night when more than three dozen shots were fired into a house on the city’s north side, police said.

The bullets went through a door and a boarded-up window, hitting the girl and woman inside, police said. The 42-year-old mother was listed in stable condition at Allegheny General Hospital.

There were at least five others inside the house, which was the scene of another shooting two days earlier, officials said.

“It doesn’t make any sense anytime you have that many rounds fired into a house where there is children, and as a result, one 12-year-old child is dead tonight,” Pittsburgh Police Chief Nate Harper said.

Harper said the door to the house was shut, but the rounds from an automatic weapon penetrated the door, striking the mother and daughter.

“Anytime we have a 12-year-old or innocent child murdered at the hands of irresponsible people, we need to get to the bottom of it to make an arrest quickly,” he said.

Harper said he doesn’t have a motive for the shooting.
