Volunteers needed for hospice program

SHARON, Pa. — Sharon Regional Health System’s Hospice and Palliative Care Program is seeking volunteers for patient care, bereavement support, office work, and other special projects. The program assists patients with a life expectancy of six months or less and their families so the patients can remain in their homes surrounded by people they love.

The next Hospice/Palliative Care volunteer training program will be from 1 to 4:30 p.m. March 11 and continues every Tuesday through April 15 at Sharon Regional’s Cancer Care Center, 2320 Highland Road, Hermitage. The course utilizes professional instructors who prepare volunteers to provide emotional support to patients and their families.

Patient volunteer assignments are made in the volunteer’s area when possible. Volunteers can provide patients with company, help with errands, and become a friend and good listener to the patient’s caregiver. Bereavement volunteers work with families after death. Office volunteers help with mailings and other paperwork.

Those interested should call the hospice office at (724) 983-3878 or toll-free at (866) 852-3960.
