Family Care Now honored
ALLIANCE — Family Care Now, Alliance Community Hospital’s urgent care facility in Louisville, received the “Medical Person of the Year” honor for 2008 at the Louisville Chamber of Commerce’s Night at the Oscars.
Family Care Now provides medical care for conditions that are urgent, though not life threatening, such as minor burns, lacerations, fractures, sprains, coughs, colds, sore throats and animal bites. In 2007, FCN treated more than 7,000 patients.
‘Wear Red Day’ at Macy’s
ST. LOUIS — Macy’s will kick off American Heart Month with national “Wear Red Day” on Feb. 1. Macy’s is a national sponsor of the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women Movement. Customers who visit stores wearing red or who make a $2 donation will receive a shopping discount on purchases made that day.
Also, Macy’s will participate in local and regional Go Red luncheons, host in-store events promoting Go Red and feature throughout the month certain merchandise from which part of the proceeds will benefit the cause.
Macy’s is starting a program this year to enhance and expand its partnership with the American Heart Association through its Go Red For Women Multicultural Fund, designed to help raise awareness of cardiovascular disease and health programs for high-risk populations.
Free health lectures
NEWTON FALLS — Dr. Ted Suzelis, a naturopathic physician, will present a lecture titled “Unlocking the Power of Your Brain to Balance Your Body & Mind” at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Healthy Treasures, 40 W. Broad St., Newton Falls; and at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Treat Yourself, 3837 Starr Centre Drive, Canfield. The free lectures explore a new nonpharmaceutical therapy for balancing brain chemistry through lab testing and nutrition. The therapy may be used to help with anxiety, depression, weight loss, insomnia, ADD/ADHD, autism, and many other mental health conditions. Light snacks will be provided. HPV program for women
BOARDMAN — A program, “What Every Woman Should Know About Cervical Cancer, Genital Warts, and the Human Papillomavirus,” will be presented by Rachel Sieman, who has a master’s degree in nursing and is a certified nurse midwife, at noon Feb. 6 at Boardman Park’s Georgeanna A. NAMI family education
YOUNGSTOWN — This spring, NAMI Mahoning Valley (National Alliance on Mental Illness) will offer its Family-to-Family education classes, which deal with many aspects of living with a person with mental illness. The classes are sponsored by NAMI MV and the Mahoning County Mental Health Board.
The series of 12 weekly classes begins Feb. 11 and runs through April 28. Class time is 7 to 9:30 p.m. each Monday at the Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane. There is no cost for family members. The classes are structured to help family members understand and support their ill relative while maintaining their own well-being. They include such topics as the definitions of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder; brain biology and causes of brain disorders; medications and treatment; communications; and rehabilitation and recovery. The classes, limited to the first 22 people who register, are taught by trained family members. Registration is required.
