Black History Month events set for our area as submitted to The Vindicator:

YOUNGSTOWN STATE UNIVERSITY

Saturday: Noon-6 p.m. The African Marketplace, Chestnut Room, Kilcawley Center. Vendors will have various items for sale. Entertainment provided by Harambee Youth Group and the Drum Circle of the Unity Building in Youngstown.

Feb. 7: 7 p.m. Art exhibition and panel discussion, The McDonough Museum of Art, Wick Avenue.

Feb. 13: 6 p.m. Education summit, Chestnut Room, Kilcawley Center.

Feb. 14: 7 p.m. Panel discussion on African Development, “Are Western Organizations and Non-Governmental Organizations an Impediment to African Development?” Youngstown YWCA, 25 W. Rayen Ave.

Feb. 16: 7:30 p.m. Keynote lecture by Dr. Julia Hare, “The State of the Black Family,” Chestnut Room, Kilcawley Center.

Feb. 23: 7 p.m. African and African-American Fashion Show, Chestnut Room, Kilcawley Center.

Feb. 25: 7:30 p.m. Selected Black Faculty Research Showcase and Panel Discussion, The Ohio Room, Kilcawley Center.

Feb. 28: 7 p.m. Panel discussion: “Race Relations in Youngstown,” Chestnut Room, Kilcawley Center.

Feb. 29: 7:30 p.m. Poetry Competition, Gallery, Kilcawley Center.

WESTMINSTER COLLEGE

Feb. 8: Westminster’s Office of Diversity Services will host its annual Black History Month celebration at 7 p.m. in Orr Auditorium. The program, “Gospel Explosion,” includes gospel music, with a tribute to the late Mahalia Jackson; black history reflections; and civil rights tributes. Featured musical groups are: “S3 & The Truth,” McDonald’s Gospelfest 2007 award-winning choir; and Gospelfest winners “Sounds of Zion” and “God Only Knows.” The event is free and open to the public.
