State honors J-M school

NORTH JACKSON — Jackson-Milton Elementary School has earned the Ohio Department of Education’s “Schools of Promise” recognition for schools in which all demographic groups of pupils are achieving academic proficiency, even when the school has large percentages of low-income children. It was Jackson-Milton’s first inclusion on the list. The school will receive a School of Promise banner from the state.

Tech Prep information

YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning Area College Tech Prep Consortium is sponsoring informational events for Mahoning County high school sophomores and their parents. College Tech Prep is an educational initiative that combines college preparation with technical training. There will be an open house for sophomores interested in health careers from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 7 in Finnegan Auditorium at St. Elizabeth Health Center. The program will feature local health professionals discussing opportunities in health careers. Complimentary parking in the Park Avenue Deck. Interested students must register by Friday by calling (330) 941-2331. A parent information session for parents and guardians will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. next Saturday in the Ohio Room of Kilcawley Center at Youngstown State University. College Tech Prep teachers will present information on their respective programs and classes.

Fun for preschoolers

HUBBARD — The annual “Preschool Fun Fest” for children ages 2-5 will be held from noon to 2 p.m. next Saturday at St. Patrick Preschool, 225 N. Main St. The theme is “Take a Walk through a Winter Wonderland.” There will be snacks, games, crafts, face painting and prizes. Participants are urged to register by calling (330) 534-2509. The preschool is now also accepting registrations for the 2008-09 school year.

AUSTINTOWN — Immaculate Heart of Mary School, 4470 Norquest Blvd., is accepting registrations for the 2008-09 school year. The school also participates in the Ohio EdChoice Scholarship Program.

Preschool registration

HUBBARD — Villa Maria Theresa School, owned and operated by the Oblate Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, at 50 Warner Road, will begin accepting 3- and 4-year-old preschool registration Monday for the 2008-09 school year. Montessori open house

YOUNGSTOWN — The Montessori School of the Mahoning Valley, 2008 Lynn Ave., Youngstown, will hold an open house for parents of children ages 2-12 from 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 3. The preschool, elementary, and middle school teachers will be available for questions, and tours will be provided. Applications are currently being accepted for spring and fall enrollment. Grandparents Day

YOUNGSTOWN — Ursuline High School, 750 Wick Ave., will hold a Grandparents Day from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. Grandparents are invited to join their grandchildren for a prayer service, continental breakfast and a performance by the band and choir. Tours and classroom visitation will follow.

Teens’ art on display

YOUNGSTOWN — Local middle and high school artists whose works were entered in the 2008 Northeastern Ohio Regional Scholastic Art competition will have their efforts displayed in The McDonough Museum at Youngstown State University now through Feb. 8. Nearly 600 pupils from 66 schools in Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Ashtabula counties participated in the areas of painting, ceramics, drawing, graphic design, computer graphics, mixed media, photography, printmaking and sculpture. Admission to the museum is free. Hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesdays and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Minority Day Law Program

AKRON — The University of Akron School of Law will hold a Minority Law Day Program at the School of Law, Wolf Ledges at University Avenue, from 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 23 for prospective students. The program will include an admissions and financial aid session, a mock law class and a student and alumni panel discussion. Guided tours will be available beginning at noon. Edwin Meese to speak

GROVE CITY, Pa. — Ronald Reagan’s chief of staff, U.S. attorney general and longtime confidant Edwin P. Meese III will open “A Door to the Oval Office” at the second annual Ronald Reagan Lecture at 7 p.m. Feb. 12 in Ketler Auditorium of the Pew Fine Arts Center at Grove City College. Meese will give an insider’s view of the internal workings of the Reagan administration and the significant events of Reagan’s presidency through a town hall-style discussion. Registration fees for the public are: $75, which includes a pre-lecture reception, lecture, reception and book signing; $20, which includes lecture, reception and book signing; and $10 for non-Grove City College students, including lecture and reception (college ID required).
